The 40-year-old man who was shot and killed by San Francisco police Friday after an hourslong standoff has been identified as Sergio Barrios, according to the San Francisco Chief Medical Examiner’s Office.

Barrios was killed Friday in Bernal Heights after he entered a market armed with a gun, officials said. Police shot him when he reached for the gun, SFPD reported.

The incident began at the New Bosworth Market on the corner of Bosworth and Cuvier streets at roughly 2:20 p.m. when workers said Barrios, who lived upstairs from the market, walked into the store with a bottle of alcohol and a loaded gun.

When police arrived, Barrios had moved to the backyard of the store where he began snorting what appeared to be cocaine, police said. Officers tried to negotiate with Barrios for about three and a half hours before he allegedly reached for his gun and was shot by police.

Ryan Curry, a reporter for ABC7 News, posted a video on social media showing officers in tactical gear aiming a rifle into the market's backyard from behind a fence. Curry said a news crew heard “several pops” that sounded like gunfire shortly after the video was taken.

Police are expected to hold a public community meeting 10 days after the incident.

The fatal shooting is the first time San Francisco police have shot and killed a person during District Attorney Brooke Jenkins' time in office; now her office will decide whether to file criminal charges.

The last deadly shooting by SFPD was a year before Friday’s incident, when officers shot and killed two homeless men wrestling over a knife beneath a freeway near the edge of Potrero Hill. That case remains under investigation by the California Department of Justice.
