A man has been shot dead on Pier 5 at San Francisco's Embarcadero—a popular tourist area and bustling transit hub—San Francisco police said.

Officers found the body at around 12:40 a.m. Monday after responding to a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived they found a 43-year-old male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.

"Investigators from the SFPD Homicide Detail responded to the scene and took over the investigation," said a police spokerperson. "No arrests have been made. This is an open and active investigation."
