The San Francisco Bay Area and large portions of Northern California have been experiencing historic levels of rainfall since the onset of 2023. Downtown San Francisco experienced a whopping 5.33 inches of rain on New Year’s Eve, according to the National Weather Service.

Another storm is set to ravage the Bay Area Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Amid all this talk of storms, you’ve probably been inundated by the term “atmospheric river.” But what exactly is that?
