Ousted DA Chesa Boudin will not run for district attorney this fall, he announced on Twitter Thursday morning.

"I am choosing to put my family first: I will not be running for office in 2022," Boudin tweeted amid a long thread on his reasoning.

The former DA, known for his progressive approach to criminal justice, was recalled in June in an effort led by newly appointed DA Brooke Jenkins, who quit Boudin's office in the fall of 2021.

Speculation on whether he would run ramped up earlier this summer when he said in an interview that he hadn't ruled it out.

In the Twitter thread, Boudin said that in making the decision he had "taken stock of the burden that more than three years of nearly non-stop campaigning placed on my family."

He cited his young son, his father's return after more than 40 years in prison and prioritizing his wife's work as the primary reasons for his decision to opt out of the race.

To date, just Jenkins and civil rights attorney Joe Alioto Veronese have filed papers to run. The deadline is Aug. 12.
