From Jaranita in the Marina to La Mar on the Embaracadero, San Francisco boasts some impressive offerings of Nikkei, a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese culinary styles.

Fans of the food have even more to look forward to in 2023. Chotto Matte, an international fine dining purveyor of Nikkei cuisine, is slated to open a much anticipated SF outpost next spring, according to a release posted on Bay Area real estate industry news hub The Registry SF today.

The restaurant will occupy a 15,000 square-foot space on the rooftop of 100 Stockton Street in Union Square and is expected to serve a range of sushi, sashimi, ceviches and a variety of marinated meats, vegetables and seafoods prepared with a Japanese robata grill in an eye-popping setting.

Chotto Matte’s sibling restaurants across the world are known to be visually stunning, and the newest San Francisco addition appears poised to keep that tradition alive. As of last year, the restaurant’s design called for a full-size palm tree, fire pits and carving a hole in the ceiling to accommodate an atrium. Once opened, Chotto Matte will be the second Nikkei restaurant to join SF’s skyline, following Kaiyo Rooftop, which opened at the Hyatt Place Hotel near Oracle Park earlier this year.

The building that Chotto Matte will call home was once a Macy’s men’s store and its facade has been redesigned by architecture firm Gensler. Chotto Matte will be joined by hospitality company Convene, which creates and manages venues for events and meetings, as a fellow tenant at the site.
