A young man who fell into the water near the Golden Gate Bridge on Tuesday and was retrieved by divers died on Wednesday, officials said.
The man was in critical condition Tuesday after he fell off a San Francisco pier while collecting cans and became submerged 16 feet underwater, San Francisco Fire Department officials said. He was taken to California Pacific Medical Center South Van Ness Hospital.
Shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, he was declared dead at the hospital, fire officials said.
On Thursday, the Medical Examiner identified the man as 31-year-old Oscar Calvillo Jr., whose residence is unknown.
Rescue teams responded to reports of a man having trouble staying afloat after falling off the pier at Torpedo Wharf near the Golden Gate Bridge Tuesday morning. Fire officials said the victim had been collecting cans at around 10:04 a.m. when he fell into the water.
Calvillo was retrieved from the water around 10:50 a.m. by a rescue team including a Coast Guard helicopter, rescue swimmers from the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and fire department divers.
He was found "clinically dead" at the scene with no pulse, officials said. First responders made life-saving efforts, before transferring him to a hospital in critical condition.
