A new Vans store could move into the site of a former bakery if plans are approved Thursday.
If approved, the popular skate clothing and accessories store will take over the ground and mezzanine levels of 2066 Chestnut St., between Pierce Street and Mallorca Way in the Marina, adding to a slate of shopping destinations like the Apple Store and Herman Miller.
The storefront was previously occupied by popular patisserie Le Marais Bakery, known for its flaky croissants and Parisian atmosphere, which shuttered its Marina outpost in the fall of 2021.
SF Eater reported that upon hearing about the bakery's looming closure, loyal customers filed a petition to urge Mayor London Breed and local supervisor Catherine Stefani to support Le Marais. The bakery owners said the closure was due to a huge tax bill.
The bakery continues to operate in the Castro, Lower Nob Hill and Mill Valley, as well as in La Grande Creperie at the Ferry Building. The bakery was contacted for comment.
Vans said the store could open this summer in an email to The Standard.
Because the commercial space would need to be converted from a restaurant to a retail store, the SF Planning Commission is slated to approve the planned renovation with conditions, according to the meeting agenda.
The plans will be approved or denied at the next committee meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at City Hall.
